Artists Statement
Fiona Merchant’s multi-media practice explores socio-economic, political and cultural systems that pervade our day to day existence. She examines ways in which these mentally invisible structures influence our everyday lives, impregnating our thinking and directing our attitudes. So taken for granted and deeply ingrained, they tend to slip beneath our consciousness. The work looks to disrupt or distract from the somewhat passive process by which it all washes over us and to encourage awareness and critical thinking of the invisible power structures in which we swim. Often using recognisable, everyday materials, Merchant investigates themes of part-hidden/part-revealed, transparency and ambiguity.
