In recent years my work has been concerned with the psychological and emotional impact of public spaces, particularly travel spaces. I wanted to explore fears illicited by moving into these spaces and the experience of being in them. Also I was intrigued by what we project onto people we encounter in public spaces so found myself dealing with the watching, the observer, almost the contemporary flaneur. This inevitably led to being watched : by other travellers but increasingly by CCTV, security staff and police. Surveillance, for what and for whom? The fear of terrorism; are we all implicated now? Recent work includes a series of paintings of surveillance images and a series of video films of the Olympic site. These films are moving into new territory for me. Largely from the outside they portray the exclusion of the fenced enclosure and document a frayed urban landscape of intrigue and few dwellings into one of anticipated iconic achievement.
